I've been looking at getting a vintage sax for a while. Martin Committee, Kohlert, Buffett S1, Buescher, something like that. Buescher True-Tone or Aristocrat seemed to be the best bet. There is a bounty of these horns out there (excepting the Kohlert). Stencils are tempting budget-wise, but it would be far more risky in terms of an Ebay buy. On the modern side of things, that I know if, the Yamaha 61/62 would be the only thing in my budget.
I ended up finding a great Buescher true-tone, SN: 180xxx, seemingly straight from the 1920's, minus the oxidation. Initially, I was confused, as later Bueschers have Norton screw-in springs, but this horn didn't have any. Turns out that the true-tones were made with blue-steel springs. Original snaps on the snap-in pads were all there, as far as I could tell. As deflated and crusty the pads were, I'm tempted to think that these were also original.
I took this photo after polishing the bell and bell keys, which obviously took a while. Its currently being overhauled at JJ Woodwinds in Shreveport, LA. I asked for pictures of the sax during the overhaul process. I'll post the real before and after photos when its done. They are "touching up" the satin silver, but as far as I am aware, without machine-polishing or re-plating the whole thing.
